Most of the large businesses in the city are in Center City which also serves as the financial district of Philadelphia, drawing many workers from suburban areas. This area includes many of the city's most historic attractions including Independence National Park, home to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. It also includes city government at City Hall, the Pennsylvania Convention Center and most major hotels. Along Benjamin Franklin Parkway from City Hall to the Philadelphia Art Museum is the museum district with many of the city's museums, such as the Franklin Institute, Museum of Natural History and the Rodin Museum, as well as the main branch of the Philadelphia Library.

This area includes Center City East and West, Chinatown, the Delaware Riverfront including Penn's Landing, Franklin-Callowhill, Olde City, Rittenhouse Square, Society Hill, and Washington Square. Most of the residents who live in this area are in the high rise apartment buildings or in expensive townhouses in the Society Hill area, and are predominately white.
