West Philadelphia – that area on the west bank of the Schuylkill River -- is a large, divergent neighborhood which includes many of the city's major colleges and universities including Drexel University, the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and the University of Pennsylvania.
At its northeastern boundary is City Avenue which includes St. Joseph's University and parts of Fairmount Park. West Philadelphia also encompasses the Philadelphia Zoo and Mann Music Center. The area includes 14% of the city's population at about 220,000 residents.
