The San Diego Art Institute in Balboa Park is dedicated to the advancement of the visual arts through outreach, education, and exhibition, with an emphasis on supporting and exhibiting the work of emerging artists from the San Diego area. With this in mind, the San Diego Art Institute launches a brand new exhibition by San Diego artists every four to six weeks, called Museum of the Living Artist. This program includes over 30 juried shows each year.
In addition, the Solo Featured Artist program, which hosts 12 shows per year, features the work of individual regional SDAI member artists. Since 1955, SDAI has produced its program, the "Annual" – a juried show of regional artists in which a different internationally-known juror is invited each year. The show is juried by slides and thus provides a venue to local artists for international competition.
The Institute also sponsors social outreach through the visual arts through a program Outreach Through Exhibition, which asks artists to engage their art in social and community issues. Previous exhibitions have included such titles as "Winged Victory -- Transcending Breast Cancer" and "Our Healing Arts", an AIDS awareness endeavor.
