Nothing typifies the lifestyle of Southern California more than its love affair with the automobile. The San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park chronicles the history of this iconic 20th Century vehicle, featuring more than 80 historic automobiles and motorcycles. You don't have to be a fan of Ol' Blue Eyes to appreciate Frank Sinatra’s 1967 Austin Petrol Hire Car, not to mention Louie Mattar’s fabulous $75,000 car.
The museum was founded in response to the dream of Briggs Cunningham, a renowned automobile collector and racer. After many years of discussion, the San Diego City Council unanimously approved the museum in 1980 and granted a long term lease for one of the historic buildings in Balboa Park. Finally open in 1988, the museum has been a draw for millions of local auto enthusiasts and tourists from all over the world.
