The Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park is a multidisciplinary cultural arts center with the goal of promoting, preserving, and providing education on Chicano, native Mexican, Latin American, and Native American art and culture. Founded in 1970, the organization has been instrumental in the development of a wide range of artistic groups including the Mexican American Liberation Art Front (MALAF), Teatro Mestizo, and its now-resident dance company Ballet Folklorico Aztlan (Aztlán" is a term used by Chicanos to describe the American Southwest.)
Classes and presentations are offered on a wide range of topics from drama, music, dance, and arts and crafts. Rotating exhibits and performances of various types are featured, including Azteca dance, Teatro Chicano, film screenings, exhibits, musical performances, installation art, readings, receptions and other events.
The Centro's circular building, converted from a water tower, features several colorful murals at the main entrance, and has offices and workrooms, studios, and a theater. It is one of the largest Chicano cultural arts buildings in the Southwest.
In addition, the building doubles as a gallery with a permanent collection featuring contemporary work by Latino, Chicano and Native American artists. The works include a variety of media including oil, acrylic, watercolors, prints, poster art, photography, and three-dimensional works of many renowned artists.
