The San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park is dedicated to preserving the heritage of railroading and the history of model railroading. Its exhibits feature miniature representations of California railroads by its four non-profit affiliated clubs: the San Diego Model Railroad Club, La Mesa Model Railroad Club, the San Diego Society of N-Scale, and the San Diego 3-Railers. Each club is fully responsible for the design, construction, funding, and operation of its exhibit.

The museum contains the world's largest indoor model railroad display, constructed by volunteer club members of approximately 320. Among its exhibits are the Cabrillo Southwestern O-Scale Exhibit (1/48 actual size), the San Diego & Arizona Eastern HO-Scale Exhibit (1/87 actual size), the Tehachapi Pass HO-Scale Exhibit (1/87 actual size), and the Pacific Desert Lines N-Scale Exhibit (1/160 actual size).

In addition to its exhibits, the museum features a Toy Train Gallery with four separate main lines, all operating, including realistic scenery, and many accessories.
