The Anacostia Waterfront area is in the throes of a massive revitalization effort through a public/private partnership investing more than $10 billion. The towns lining the river along its 14 waterfront miles are Historic Anacostia, Crestwood, Palisades, Columbia Heights, Fairview, and Deanwood.
Because of this investment, the Anacostia Waterfront is the city’s fastest-growing area of employment, entertainment and residential growth. The redevelopment project is creating 6,500 units of new housing, three million square feet of new office space, 32 acres of new parkland and a 20-mile network of riverside trails. Transportation projects will also link the communities to the Washington metropolitan area. And perhaps the largest enhancement of all is the new Washington Nationals Park, the new 41,888-seat home stadium for DC's professional baseball team. The park, which just opened in March, 2008, features an innovative architecture, state-of-the-art video and audio systems, and has earned the "green" accreditation as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) structure (in fact, exceeding that certification to garner the even more environmentally-friendly "Silver Status").
