Dupont Circle, a small urban park at the intersection of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut avenues, lends its name to this cosmopolitan neighborhood, known for famous Embassy Row, and the home of Washington's largest concentration of private art galleries.
Dupont Circle is a true vacation destination, with fine museums, historic homes, a wide range of excellent restaurants, all-night bookstores, movie theaters, and hotels. The nightlife is hopping, and the area is popular with recent college graduates, and lots of young people, and has the requisite high-rise apartment buildings and rowhouses to house them. The neighborhood also supports a thriving gay/lesbian community.
The Dupont Circle park itself lies at the center of all this action, filled with picnicking visitors, office workers, tourists, bicycle couriers, children, and resident chess players. Its center fountain is a glorious white marble, designed by Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial.
