Mount Vernon Estate is the family home of the nation’s first president George Washington. Located along the shores of the Potomac River in Virginia, the grounds and home have been lovingly maintained by Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, and reflect much of the scenic beauty of the days when it was Washington’s home.
The Association is a historic gem in its own right, founded in 1853 and the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country.
Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in the nation, and is a great respite from the busy urban areas around D.C. The grounds totaled about 8,000 acres in the 18th century, and today roughly 500 acres of this historic estate have been preserved. The estate includes 20 structures and 50 acres of gardens, maintained as they existed in 1799, as well as a museum, the tombs of George and Martha Washington, Washington's greenhouse, an outdoor exhibit devoted to American agriculture as practiced by Washington, and a memorial to 18th Century’s slaves.
Festivities are always going on at Mount Vernon Estate, especially during the Holiday Season. In fact, Mount Vernon's Christmas programs have substantially increased since previous years to include not only candle light tours and christmas carols, but also a special daytime program that is being ofered from Thanksgiving Day weekend through the Twelve Days of Christmas.
A favorite non-holiday event is Mount Vernon’s Wine Festival & Sunset Tour.
