Famous across America as an enduring symbol of freedom and the struggle against slavery, the Lincoln Memorial may be the most-visited of all the capital's landmarks. Since its opening in 1922, it has frequently been the location of historic events, most notably the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech which drew 200,000 people.
The 19-ft high statue of Lincoln, deep in thought, is the centerpiece of this neoclassical structure, with 36 fluted Doric columns that represent the states of the Union when Lincoln was president. Within the chamber, the walls are inscribed with the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.
The memorial is located at the west end of the National Mall and provides magnificent city views.
