Since its opening in 1907, Union Station not only served to consolidate the city's railroads (Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad) in one location, it created an impressive, grand entrance to the city. Since that time, it has become one of the busiest and most-visited locales in Washington, D.C., boasting 32 million people each year.

The station was completely refurbished and expanded in 1988, to include a movie theater, restaurants, a food court, and a wide variety of retail shops along the Concourse and Main Hall.
